Maybury Artist - Joe Richardson

Joe with his custom built Maybury “Bluey”

Joe has been involved with Maybury guitars for several years now and has two of our custom built guitars.

He got his first Maybury in 2019, a beautiful S-type. We worked with Joe to nail down exactly what he was looking for from a guitar, including wood choice, pickups, hardware and finish. He went for a Shu Sugi Ban finish, an ancient Japanese weathering method thats not only beutiful but hard wearing. He ended up calling it “Bluey” even though it was more green as it was bluesy tonal beast.

When Joe formed the band “Abstractian” the brief changed somewhat. As a progressive hard rock / metal outfit where he is the only guitarist, Joe needed to make big sound with what he plays.

This was the point that Joe commissioned his second Maybury. He needed something brutal, heavy with the ability to smash out low end dirty riffs and rich vocal chords while also handling the lead parts. Together we started planning his second guitar and came up with what became known as “The Beast”, another Shu Sugi Ban finished guitar, but this time a C standard tuned Fish Hook T-type baritone with a 29" scale length.

Joe says: “This guitar has one of the most incredible necks and body i've ever seen on a guitar, sure i'm biased but trust me its ridiculously good. Thats not the best bit though, coupled with some incredible Fletcher Pergatory pickups and tapped pots mean it has such a range of tone from simple controls. It can sound like a rich warm acoustic all the way to a drop tuned djent worthy riff machine and everything in between.

I'm lucky enough to own a lot of guitars, pro Jacksons, USA Gibsons, vintage 70s stuff and they are all great but this guitar beats them all hands down.

Having worked with Maybury for a few years i've played alot of his creations now and every one of them feels beautiful to play.

I am really proud to represent Maybury and consider myself really lucky to be involved with such high quality hand built UK gear!”

These 2 guitars are all over Joe’s recorded work and are his go to guitars for a lot of recordings, apparently they track really well.

We have worked with Joe for many years now and really appreciate having such a talented guitarist on board representing Maybury
