Maybury Artist - Izzy Stephens

Izzy Stephens is the lead Guitarist for John Motors, a groove-driven funk band based in London.

“Music has always been at the heart of my life, influenced heavily by my father, a former sound engineer who toured with artists like ZZ Top, Rory Gallagher, and Nine Below Zero. As a kid, I was lucky enough to tag along to shows and festivals, experiencing incredible gigs first-hand. My dad also used to own a guitar shop, so our house walls were lined with rare and beautiful guitars: a ’59 Les Paul Junior, a ’60s Tele, a ’50s Martin, and a ’30s Kalamazoo, to name a few. Having the chance to play these guitars helped me discover what it is I really liked and wanted out of a guitar.

When I was younger, I cut my teeth playing function gigs, working in pit bands, and teaching, experiences that shaped me as a musician and performer. I later moved to London to study Jazz at Middlesex University, where I connected with some of the best musicians I know. Years later, some of us reunited to form John Motors.”

Based in Harringay, London, John Motors began as an instrumental trio and has since evolved into a dynamic four-piece powerhouse. They fuse infectious funk grooves with soulful melodies. The addition of Celia on vocals brought a new dimension to their sound, and together they have continued to push creative boundaries and grow as a band.

Izzy first tried Maybury Guitars at the Woking Guitar Show and was struck by their versatility, playability, and distinctive design. That subsequently led to him collaborating on demo sessions and picking up his own Fish Hook S Upscaler.

“Recently I was lucky enough to shoot some demo videos with Jason and get my hands on a Maybury Upscaler, and I find myself struggling to put it down! I’m excited to make music with it and adding it to the arsenal for future gigs.”
