Custom Maybury Meloca Bass built for Calum Hood

This custom Maybury Meloca Bass was created for Calum Hood, bassist and core member of 5 Seconds of Summer.

Calum approached us looking for an instrument that would stand out on stage, deliver a massive sound, and align with our sustainability values.

Working closely together, we designed and built a completely unique bass using 100% reclaimed timber:

  • Body: Reclaimed spruce, once used as floor joists

  • Neck: White oak, repurposed from a kitchen offcut

  • Fretboard: Massaranduba, salvaged from old decking

Based on our signature Meloca body shape, this bass features a bold neon green chalk paint finish paired with a pink and white marbled acrylic pickguard for an unmistakable visual statement.

Adding a personal touch, the fretboard includes a custom 5SOS star emblem across the 7th and 8th frets, while the neck plate proudly displays the 5 Seconds of Summer logo.

Premium hardware from American company Badass, including a nickel high mass bridge and sealed modern tuners, ensuring the ultimate tuning and performance experience.

Under the hood, it’s fitted with a custom Mojo reversed split-coil pickup, crafted specifically for this build and featuring nickel open-top covers. The result is a punchy, articulate tone that cuts effortlessly through the mix. The electronics include CTS potentiometers, cloth-covered wiring, and an Orange Drop capacitor, with the addition of a kill switch to allow Calum to mute the bass easily when switching between bass and keys.

This project was a true collaboration β€” a bass designed to combine striking aesthetics, powerful tone, and sustainable craftsmanship, perfectly in tune with the energy and style of 5 Seconds of Summer.
